Module Subject: Mental Disorder, Mental Health and Public Health Assignments

Student evaluation will be based on two written assignments, two presentations and participation.

  1. One two-page (double-spaced, not including references) briefing note identifying an important mental health issue, written for a senior government or public sector official (Minister or Deputy Minister) due by 5 pm on the day of the sixth class (15%).
  2. One six-page (double-spaced, not including references) evidence brief discussing effective public health approaches to the mental disorder/mental health issue identified in the first assignment, and outlining a public health strategy to address this problem, due by 5 pm, one week following the final class (50%)

NB: All assignments must be submitted electronically to the course instructors. Please ensure you submit your paper to the correct email addresses.

Assignment One: A Briefing Note

For this assignment, you are required to

    • select an important mental health issue and
    • write a briefing note for a senior government or public sector official (Minister or Deputy Minister) who is not familiar with the issue.
  • Make sure you have narrowed your focus to Ontario (or Canada).
  • Identify three possible courses of action to address the issue with a summary of the risks and benefits of each and identify a recommended course of action.
  • Append a list of your sources to the end of your briefing note as a separate References page.
  • Your briefing note must be a maximum of 2 pages double-spaced (not including references). Use 1-inch margins set for 8.5″ x 11″ paper using Times New Roman font size 12.
  • You are expected to use a minimum of 5 academic articles (peer-reviewed journal articles) not included in the required readings for the course. Sources such as newspaper articles, magazine articles, opinion pieces, and websites can be cited as background but are not accepted toward the total of 5 academic articles.
  • You are expected to adhere to APA standards for citations, formatting, and references and to support your statements with appropriate academic literature.

Assignment Two: An Evidence Brief

  • Evidence Briefs are evidence summaries informed by rapid knowledge synthesis methods.
  • For this assignment, you are required to
    • write an evidence brief discussing effective public health approaches to the mental disorder/mental health issue identified in the first assignment.

    • Methods
    • Main Finding
    • Implications for Practice
    • References
  • Your evidence brief must be a maximum of 6 pages double-spaced (not including references). Use 1-inch margins set for 8.5″ x 11″ paper using Times New Roman font size 12.
  • You are expected to adhere to APA standards for citations, formatting, and references and to support your statements with appropriate academic literature.
  • You are expected to use a minimum of 10 academic articles (peer-reviewed journal articles) not included in the required readings for the course. Sources such as newspaper articles, magazine articles, opinion pieces, and websites can be cited as background but are not accepted toward the total of 5 academic articles.
