Assessment Summary:

Task1 – Design a small enterprise LAN based on given business scenario requirements = 50%.

Task2 – Practical implementation of the proposed topology system = 25%.

Task3 – Demonstration of the developed topology = 25%.

The Resit attempt has three assessment elements

  • Design a small enterprise network (50%): This task reinforces the adoption of best practice design methods and techniques in designing a small local area network considering the given scenario business requirements. You are required to translate these business requirements into a workable design that can be implemented efficiently. This includes designing an efficient and effective network topology, various IP Address provision, traffic flow, secure VLANS and static/dynamic routing. The proposed design should be presented in a technical specification document no more than 1500 words
  • Practical implementation (25%): This re-assessment element should be focus on implementation of the proposed network topology in task 1 include all the required configurations for the network devices. This task will develop students’ critical thinking and technical skills by allowing them to research and investigate the best practice that can be adopted to implement and deploy the proposed topology in an efficient manner. Critical thinking and technical skills will be reinforced when students translated their design into a physical/functional networking model using appropriate integrated technologies. As network engineer, you are required to translate the design topology into a fully functional local area network. The practical implementation is designed to re-enforce the student’s abilities to build operational network based on best practice techniques. Finally, students must expand their technical abilities by deploying their developed topology using Pack Tracer.
  • Technical Demo (25%): This assessment element emphasises your technical ability in presenting the developed topology and skills gained during the process of building the network. The exercise also provides an opportunity to demonstrate personal skills such as (Communication, Coordination, Negotiation, Knowledge on “MABCO “ organisation, analytic skills and finally time-bound and attention to detail) when presenting your network solution to stakeholders at MABCO regarding the feasibility of the proposed design and solution.

Rationale:

The assessment elements aim at allowing the students to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge, gained throughout the module, as well as developing their hands-on experience.  The combination of designing a network based on business requirements, building and implementing the proposed design and presenting it to the stakeholders will help the students develop key skills and knowledge for their future career as network engineers.

Business Scenario Description:

MABCO is Construction Company that recently relocated their headquarters offices (HQ) to Manchester.  As part of your job as a network engineer at MABCO you are required to design, build and deploy the network for their HQ offices.

For their HQ, the company had acquired 1 main building of 3 floors. Ground floor level 0, level 1 and level 2. Each floor will accommodate the following departments with their respective number of employees. The company employs 210 staff members among 3 departments, namely customer services department (120 employees), Human Resources and Finance department (55 employees), and IT specialists (35 employees). The company is also hosting their own application servers e.g. Mail Server, file server, Web Server…etc. The company has currently a branch office in Leeds with 37 staff members that is required to connect to Manchester HQ.

You are required to design a fully operational LAN network that should consider the following requirements:

Accessibility:

  • Enable all the staff to be able to share documents and work together as if they were in the same department.
  • All staff should have reliable internet connection through their ISP.
  • All servers should be placed in Server farm that can only be managed through IT staff members

 

Topology:

MABCO has been given a private class B IPv4/IPv6 addresses (Each student will be allocated IPv4/IPv6 addresses on Moodle page).

Use variable-length subnet masking (VLSM) for your design to minimise wastage.

ISP connection will be via HQ’s in Manchester using a real address. The address of the network connecting MABCO HQ to ISP is IPv4: 190.115110.0/30, IPv6: 2001:087a:09ac:54c8::/64

ISP Web Server is addressed IPv4: 185.24.34.20/24 , IPv6: 2001:58cd:6abc:b243::/64.

Protocols:

IPv4/IPv6 network.

Use simple routing protocols to communication between HQ’s and the branch office in Leeds.

Services:

DHCP server is located in the server farm to provide all hosts with an IP address.

Your proposed design should be presented in technical specification document that covers the following business requirement:

  1. Analyse the given business scenario to produce an efficient network design based on the provided network requirements.
  2. Design an appropriate IP addressing scheme for the proposed design.
  3. Select appropriate network devices to build the network topology.
  4. Employees in the same department should have their own private network with access to other departments
  5. The company’s servers should be located in a ‘Server Farm’ zone that can be accessed by all employees but only managed by the IT department.
  6. The company’s business requires regular internet access, so it’s crucial to provide backup for the internet connectivity to minimise the company’s network downtime.
  7. Identify the best network design approach for the network with justification for the number and specs of the chosen devices.
  8. Produce a network topology that illustrating the proposed network design and layout.
  9. Document all the above design consideration in a technical specification report.

This section will set the foundation of the structure of your technical specification report that is required to meet Task1’s requirements, but you are free to innovate on the report structure and content.

Submission for the proposed network design should be in the form of a technical specification document that has no more than 1500 words. The document should include, but not limited to, the below headings:
